Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means of expression. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a young student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of a particular member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
